THE BATH RITUAL

Fleurs de Provence Bath Salts

a lavender soak for tired muscles and tension

Sale price$24.00

Some evenings the only thing that helps is warm water, low light, and the scent of lavender rising off the surface of the bath. Fleurs de Provence is a mineral-rich lavender soak, French grey sea salt and Epsom steeped with lavender buds and lavender oil, the flower women have drawn into the evening bath for centuries. Run the water warm, sink in, and let the day begin to loosen its hold.

The Plants

Lavender is the plant the whole bath is built around. In Provence it grows in long violet rows under a hard summer sun, and the flower that comes off those fields carries both the brightness of the heat and the calm lavender has always been loved for. Drawing it into warm water is one of the oldest evening rituals there is.

The minerals are chosen to hold that lavender rather than compete with it. French grey sea salt and Epsom give the water its body and that clean, mineral feel against the skin, baking soda softens the water itself, and a little apricot kernel oil keeps you from stepping out tighter than you went in. Together they make a soak that feels cleansing and comforting at once.

What the formula is really for is the transition. A long day collects in the body as a kind of held tension, in the shoulders, the lower back, the place behind the eyes. A warm lavender bath is a way of telling all of that it can set itself down now. The plants do not rush, and for these few minutes, neither do you.

Lavender

I grew up with lavender as a French inheritance, the smell of it tucked into linen and stirred into the bath at the end of the day. It grows best where the summers are dry and bright, the plant storing all that light and giving it back as scent. Lavender has been drawn into bathwater for centuries, not to fix anything but to mark the line between the day and the night. When I work with it in a soak I want the buds and the oil both, so the scent comes through round and real rather than thin. It is the plant I reach for when my own body has forgotten how to slow down.
